Stimulus Tax Credit Up to $1,500

On February 17th, President Obama signed the $789 billion economic stimulus bill that included tax credit incentives for homeowners who make energy-efficient improvements. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 modifies and extends federal tax credits for windows and doors that improve energy efficiency. To be eligible, windows and doors must have a U-Factor equal to or less than 0.30 and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) equal to or less than 0.30. Homeowners can now claim a 30% federal tax credit (Up to $1,500 on the homeowner’s primary residence). Qualifying windows and doors

How to qualify for the Federal Tax Credit

  • Purchase qualifying Polaris Technologies windows (UltraWeld, DynaTech, ThermalWeld, and ValuSmart) or doors (Ultra Steel and Ultra Fiberglass Doors). The windows or doors must have both a U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of 0.30 or lower to qualify. Qualifying windows and doors

2009/2010 Energy Tax Credit Details

  • Tax credit is for the cost of the product only and does not include installation costs. Be sure to ask for a sales receipt that shows the cost of the product only.
  • Tax credit is 30% of the amount paid for the product up to a maximum of $1,500 combined for 2009 and 2010 (Including other eligible items listed in the IRS Notice).
  • This is a new tax credit for 2009 and 2010. The home must be the taxpayer’s primary residence.

What is the U-Value and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient?

  • U-Value: Measures how much heat escapes the home. The lower the number, the more heat is retained inside where it’s needed. The U-Values are very important in colder climates.
  • Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): Measures how much solar radiation enters the home. The lower the number, the more heat is blocked. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient is important in warmer climates.

Understanding the Window Label

This is a sample of the NFRC label that must be saved off of each window and door to get the Federal Tax Credit.

  • The label will have the type of window, and the glass configuration.
  • The U-Value must be 0.30 or lower to qualify for the Federal Tax credit. If this number is above 0.30, you will not get a tax Credit for that window or door.
  • The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) must also be 0.30 or lower to Qualify for the Federal Tax Credit. If this number is above 0.30, you will not get a tax Credit for that window or door.
